Many modern small petrol engines, including the Ford 1.0 EcoBoost, run the timing belt inside the engine oil. This is called a wet belt. As it wears, it can shed rubber into the oil, block the oil pickup and starve the engine of oil. Wet belt replacement is one of our specialities.
Which engines have a wet belt?
The best known is the Ford 1.0 EcoBoost three-cylinder, found in the Fiesta, Focus, EcoSport, B-Max, C-Max, Puma and Transit Courier. Other belt-in-oil engines include the Ford 1.5 EcoBoost three-cylinder, the 1.1 Ti-VCT in the later Fiesta, and the 1.2 PureTech petrol used by Peugeot, Citroën, DS and Vauxhall. Warning signs of a worn wet belt
Look out for the oil pressure warning light (even briefly), an engine management light, a rattle or ticking from the timing side, and black flecks or bits of rubber on the dipstick or in the oil. On some engines, debris affecting the vacuum pump makes the brake pedal hard. If the oil pressure light comes on, stop the engine and call us: driving on can destroy the engine.
When should it be changed?
Ford’s published interval for the 1.0 EcoBoost belt has changed over the years and depends on the model year. Early cars were set at 10 years or 150,000 miles, and later ones have shorter intervals. In practice belts often wear sooner, especially where oil changes were missed or the wrong oil was used. We recommend having the belt inspected from around 5–6 years or 60,000 miles, and replacing it at any sign of wear or swelling. We can check your car’s exact interval from the registration.

How long does a wet belt change take?
Usually most of a working day at our Tyland Lane workshop. It’s a workshop job rather than a mobile one, because it needs special locking tools and often means taking the sump off.
What happens if a wet belt fails?
The belt breaks up and the rubber blocks the oil pickup strainer. That causes low oil pressure, which can wreck the turbo and engine bearings. If the belt snaps, the valves and pistons can collide. Replacing the belt on time costs far less than a new engine.
Can I check my wet belt myself?
You can watch for the warning signs: black debris on the dipstick, the oil pressure light, or a rattle. A proper inspection means taking off the timing cover or using a borescope, which we can do for you.
